Our U15s Mixed squad played our home Eastern Water Polo League match against a Colchester U15s team fixture last Friday 7th of June. It was very physical match with personal tussles between our players and Colchester all throughout the game and as ever some heroic goal keeping by Pheobe. But unfortunately Colchester edged the win by one goal. (or gifted you decide)
From the start Colchester came at the Torpedoes and took an early lead to go one up. Torpedoes responded and started to take the game to Colchester, chances missed by both sides, James won and then scored a penalty to level the score. Just before the end of the first quarter Colchester hits us with another goal to lead 1-2 at the break.
Into the 2nd quarter, saw the Torpedoes players take the upper hand scoring three goals without reply – Conall, Rufus and Robert. Then towards the end of this quarter we saw a goal being awarded to Colchester. We all thought the Colchester player had missed his shot as it rebounded of the pool wall, however Chris must had special vision as he gave the goal. Players shrugged their shoulders and got on with the game. Referee decisions are final and we all make mistakes from time to time, but I do believe that some ‘special glasses’ were awarded Chris at Junior training on Monday to remind him of this incident.
So Torpedoes 4-3 up at half time, into the third quarter, Colchester scored early to level at 4 all, then Rufus pops up and get another goal for Torpedoes to give us a slender 5-4 lead. Another goal from Colchester levels things again, and then they managed to get their nose in front ending the third quarter with 5-6 lead.
Into a the final quarter, players on both side not giving any quarter, some interesting marking techniques were observed from from poolside by both sides. Colchester then scores leaving Torpedoes 2 goals behind at 5-7 and time running out. The torpedoes players rallied and kept the pressure on the Colchester goal. The pressure pays off , Rufus scores his final goal of the evening to cut the deficit in half. Unfortunately the clock ran down so Torpedoes were unable to salvage a draw.
Next up for the U15s Mon 1st July – our home match at Deben Pool against the ‘old’ enemy Ipswich Water Polo U15s then followed by a chance for revenge against Colchester at their place on 7th July
